This month, one important feature in the new clip editor for advanced subtitle edition, closing a feature parity gap with the legacy editor.
What's new in this release:
Subtitling: Manual & automatic subtitle editors
This feature restores manual control over subtitle pages, letting users set exactly when each subtitle block appears and disappears on screen. This capability existed in the legacy editor but was missing from the new one. Users can now choose which subtitle editor to use for each clip.
In manual mode, advanced subtitle editing includes: overriding the current caption track or creating a new one, uploading a subtitle file, copying from another track, enabling speech-to-text, splitting a subtitle page at the current position, merging the current page with the next, applying a time offset across a range of pages, displaying page duration and characters per second, and detecting character overload at the line and page level.
How it works: Users choose between two modes when editing captions:
- Automatic mode (default): Edit the audio transcription text in the Captions tab and let the editor handle segmentation and timing automatically. It splits text into pages based on its own logic. This is the fast, low-effort option.
- Manual mode: Take full control of paging by deciding where each subtitle page starts and ends, and setting precise in/out timestamps, exactly as you could in the legacy editor. To activate this mode, click the "Edit subtitles" icon in the clip editor's vertical toolbar.
Mode selection is set at the clip level. Once you choose a mode for a clip, all further edits to that clip use the same mode, and the other mode is disabled.
This feature works with all subtitle types, including speech-to-text transcripts and embedded subtitles.
Why this matters: Automatic paging is great for quick clips, but it can produce awkward line breaks, mistimed captions, or pages that don't match the rhythm of speech. When caption quality is critical, such as for professional publishing, accessibility compliance, or branded content, manual control is essential. This feature closes the gap with the legacy editor and lets each user choose the right balance between speed and precision.
